THE GOODNESS OF GOD LEADS TO REPENTANCE
Almighty God asks us a most profound question in the last
verse of Romans 2:1-4, to get us to focus on how deep His love is for us. (1)
“Therefore, you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in
whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the
same things. (2) But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth
against those who practice such things. (3) And do you think this, O man, you
who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will
escape the judgment of God? (4) Or do you despise the riches of His goodness,
forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you
to repentance?” God is the Righteous Judge and He is not pleased with us when
we are so preoccupied with the sins of others that we fail to recognize and
repent of the same sins. God will judge us all when we act in that manner. God
says, DO YOU DESPISE ME BECAUSE I AM NOT JUDGING THE BIG PICTURE LIKE YOU? God
sees all and He is not pleased with sin in high or low places—no matter what
our status might be in society. He says, DON’T YOU KNOW THAT IT IS MY GOODNESS
THAT CAUSES ONE TO REPENT? God is so good, loving, kind and just that He gives
every one of us an opportunity to come back to Him when we mess up—when we sin.
God patiently waits for us to repent—ask Him for forgiveness, turn from our
wicked ways, and start making our way to Him. That’s why it is the richness of
God’s goodness that leads us to repentance. Thank You, LORD GOD for Your goodness
towards us. Your goodness, mercy and grace are incomparable!
